Women’s rights, justice, and action in the age of data
As we celebrate International Women’s Day and focus on Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls, conversations about equality must extend to digital spaces as well as physical ones. In today’s data-driven world, who controls information and how it is protected has a big impact on women’s rights and daily lives. While data protection is often seen as just a technical or legal matter, it affects people in real ways and is not the same for everyone.
No matter how you look at it, one thing is clear: how data is collected, stored, shared, and managed can either worsen or reduce inequalities. Good data protection helps women feel safe, have more control, take part in the economy, and trust digital systems. On the other hand, weak protections can put women and girls at risk of new forms of harm.
From a rights-based viewpoint, data protection is closely tied to privacy, dignity, and bodily autonomy. When personal data is mishandled, women may face doxxing, non-consensual image sharing, identity theft, or surveillance, particularly in contexts of domestic abuse or political repression. Strong laws, such as the General Data Protection Regulation in the European Union and the Kenya Data Protection Act, seek to give individuals greater control over how their personal data is collected and used. For women, such frameworks can provide avenues for redress when intimate data is misused or personal information is exploited without consent.
However, having rights written down does not always mean justice happens in real life. Many women still struggle to get justice because eak enforcement, not knowing the law, lack of money, or poor support from institutions. For this reason, International Women’s Day is not just about recognising rights, but also about taking action to make sure these rights are real and can be used by everyone.
Data protection also intersects directly with women’s economic participation. Workplaces increasingly rely on employee monitoring systems, biometric attendance tools, and AI-driven recruitment platforms that process sensitive data. Without adequate safeguards, algorithmic systems may replicate historical biases, screening out women or reinforcing discriminatory patterns embedded in past data. If left unchecked, such systems risk automating inequality. At the same time, strong data governance can build trust in digital platforms, enabling more women to participate confidently in e-commerce, digital banking, and remote work.
Cultural context further shapes how data protection affects women. In some communities, disclosure of personal information, such as marital status, fertility challenges, or experiences of gender-based violence, can carry significant social stigma. Weak data protection increases the risk that such sensitive details become public, potentially leading to exclusion, discrimination, or harm. Protecting data in these contexts is not only about compliance; it is about safeguarding dignity and social standing.
At the same time, policymakers face a complex balancing act. Overly rigid privacy frameworks could inadvertently limit the collection of gender-disaggregated data needed to design effective social policies. Without reliable data on women’s experiences, inequalities remain invisible and harder to address. This tension between privacy protection and visibility for policymaking highlights the need for thoughtful, context-sensitive approaches that protect individuals while enabling evidence-based action.
It is important to remember that women are not all the same. Data protection risks can vary depending on factors such as age, disability, where someone lives, income, or how visible they are in public life. For example, a woman who defends human rights, a rural trader, and a corporate executive all face different risks online. Meaningful action requires asking not only whether data is protected, but for whom, under what conditions, and with what consequences. There is also a need to enforce mechanisms, promote accountability, design inclusive technologies, and build public awareness as part of the work ahead.
