Summary

The Cherangany Participatory Forest Management Plan (PFMP) is a five-year strategy aimed at the sustainable management and conservation of the 20,215.37-hectare Cherangany Forest in Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenya. Gazetted in 1964, the forest includes Chemurgoi, Koisungur, Kipteber, and Kerer, and is managed by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS).

Developed through inclusive consultations with local communities, government agencies, and environmental authorities, and funded by the Eldoret Iten Water Fund, the plan emphasises a collaborative approach to conservation. It seeks to restore degraded areas, protect water catchments, promote wildlife conservation, and improve livelihoods through agroforestry and sustainable forest use. Additionally, guided by a shared vision to lead in sustainable forest management, the PFMP aligns with the Forest Conservation and Management Act 2016. Key strategies proposed in the plan include enrichment planting, forest education, improved plantation management, and regulated water use—ensuring that Cherangany Forest continues to support both biodiversity and community well-being for generations to come.
